History of Torquay United

In 1990, I wrote the first ever book on the history of Torquay United Football Club. Released as a paperback in time for Christmas 1990, it was written to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the club, founded in 1899, switching from amateur to professional status, hence its title, Torquay United - The First 70 Years.

Only a few thousand copies were ever printed by the publishers, Obelisk Publications, and they were sold out very quickly which is why they are now collectors' items fetching rather more than the original, modest retail price of £4.95.

At the time, I was working as a news reporter with the Western Morning News and was also their Torquay United correspondent. Since then, there have been promotions, relegations (including 2014, out of the Football League - again) and Wembley visits.

My little book was therefore due an update - with a modern twist. So, to coincide with a 2015 exhibition at Torquay Museum about the history of Torquay United, I wrote the club's history in a unique Brilliant Memory Map which was launched on 9 February 2015.

The potted history of some 2,500 words and 40 photos is available direct from me for £10, including p&p. It is also being retailed at the museum shop. Torquay United FC - Their History Mapped Out, published by Brilliant Autobiographies, ISBN number 978-0-9931883-0-5.

The fantastic image on the map cover (below) shows Tim Sills scoring United's second goal in the 2-0 win against Cambridge in the 2009 play-off final at Wembley and is kindly provided with permission by photographer Paul Levie.
